Guide to the Amish Country
Published in Paperback by Pelican Pub Co (October, 1995)
Average review score:

The Best Guide to Amish Country! This book certainly comes in handy to anyone desiring to explore Lancaster county's Amish Country. It was full of useful facts and information needed to fully enjoy this beautuful and simple lifestyle and country. I highly recommend it to all readers.
Just what I was looking for!Very detailed. Other PA guide books are too general and only have one chapter on PA Dutch. This is a whole book dedicated to just the PA Amish Country. My favorite part was the self-guided tour of the Amish farmland (complete with approx. miles, etc.) and the covered bridges! It includes places to eat and stay (including B&Bs). It's a great guide that covers all the bases. I've been visiting Pennsylvania Dutch Country since I was little and this book really gave me the information I needed to get the most out of a recent long weekend there.

Hagstrom New York City 5 Borough Atlas: Laminated (5th Ed)
Published in Paperback by Hagstrom Map Co (August, 1900)
Average review score:

Other editions available too!!!Hagstrom NYC 5-Borough Atlas is the definitive one. But this price actually isn't that bad; THIS edition is the deluxe laminated version. Caveat emptor: do a search; Amazon also has the large-format spiral bound and pocket sizes ... for the correct (less expensive) price (and you even save a buck over Hagstrom's own website).
Best maps on the marketAmazon is no bargain on these maps. You are better off shopping elsewhere. As a stockholder I am very disappointed with this section. Zero savings plus shipping. New York City & 5 boroughs map is 3x's the price than in the stores, unless you made a mistake. All titles that I need are not current, cost to much and to boot BACKORDERED!

NYC Taxi Driver Bible (2nd to "How to drive like a Madman"byThis is the map book that NYC taxi drivers carry around with them when they need to look up some street they don't quite know where it is located. Sometimes it is used as an excuse when they are taking you on the 'scenic route' around town before charging you triple what is supposed to cost to go from destination A to B, but I digress. This atlas is excellent, and shows every street in every borough of New York; Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. There is little in the way of tourist
attractions, and landmarks, so tourists may not find this atlas too useful, except as an accurate road map around town. There are several versions of this excellent atlas. The spiral bound pocket version is the smallest, and smaller does not mean tinier maps; it means the full-sized maps are cut smaller to fit into this book resulting in more pages to scroll through. Pages are laminated so you can simply wipe pages clean should you spill coffee on them.

Girft for husband became gift to me!I bought the book as a gift for my husband as he has wanted to explore the region. It turned out to be a gift to me as he was so inspired by Ms. Kanter's vivid descriptions he has planned a romantic long weekend get away.
Husband planned a romantic weekendI'm thrilled. I bought the book and gave it to my husband as he has wanted to explore the region. He enjoyed Ms. Kanter's vivid descriptions and got inspired. He has planned a romantic long weekend.
Hats Off for This Hudson GuideI love the Hudson Valley--from West Point's bastion of training young military leadership to Hyde Park's memorial to Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt to Poughkeepsie's CIA--that's the Culinary Institute of America, famous for scrumptious dinners. Ms. Kanter obviously loves the Valley, too, for it shows in her excellent research and writing. I highly recommend it for anyone who yearns to visit this lovely part of upstate New York. Wake up, Rip Van Winkle!

Hudson Valley Bounty: A Guide to Farms, Fine Foods, and Open-Air Markets
Published in Paperback by Berkshire House Pub (June, 1996)
Average review score:

A great guide especially for peole who love to cook and eat.We bought this book before heading up to the Hudson Valley and it proved to be invaluable. When we weren't visiting sites like the Roosevelt Museum and Vanderbilt Mansions, we stopped at many of the farms mentioned in the book. All of the farmers knew Jan Greenberg and treated us like old friends. We returned to New York with a hamper full of food which we enjoyed for days afterwards. A book like this is certainly different from your standard guidebooks and gave us a special dimension to our visit to the Hudson Valley.
Great resource for food loversWhen my family moved to the Hudson Valley, we had heard about its agricultural resurgence but it was difficult to find out where to go and who was growing and producing what. Jan Greenberg's book has been a wonderful source for the freshest, just-picked fruits and vegetables. We now buy most of our meat and poultry locally as well. We know that we are eating food that not only tastes good but is grown and raised in a way that makes us feel good about eating it. We also like being able to tell our children the stories about the farmers who raise the food that we are eating. All in all, this is a great resource.

Hudson Valley Harvest: A Food Lover's Guide to Farms, Restaurants, and Open-Air Markets
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (June, 2003)
Average review score:

Must have for Hudson Valley travelThis is THE book for anyone who lives, works, visits or is even thinking of a trip to the Hudson Valley, this bucolic but agriculturally threatened area, just an hour north of New York City. Jan Greenberg not only tells where to buy and eat these outstanding (and tasty) products but in a non-preachy way makes the reader understand why it is important to support these local farmers and producers. Her profiles and stories of the farmers who grow the fruits and vegetables and raise the livestock are truly heartfelt and gave me, and will do the same I think for anyone else who reads them, a new understanding of what is like to be a grower where everything, from weather to the economy, is out of your control. This is the high risk profession!! It makes Wall Street look safe.
Above all, though, this is a book about enjoying food --buying it, serving it and tasting it. As Danny Meyer, owner of New York City's Union Square Cafe and other restaurants known for their support of local farms, writes - "This book deserves a place on the bookshelf (or in the glove compartment) of every itinerant aficionado of New York's bounty." He's right.
We loved itWe bought this book before a weekend trip to the Hudson Valley and can't imagine traveling to the area without it. It has everything you would want to know about the farmers and what they are growing and producing. It tells you where and what to eat and how to use what you buy at a farmstand or local farmers market. It also made us really think about the people who grow the food. Their stories are uniformly interesting, even moving. The author has a pleasingly gentle touch when she writes about issues so much in the news today like organics, the humane treatment of animals and keeping small farms viable. Even if you aren't visiting the Hudson Valley, this is definitely a worthwhile book to have and read.

This guide-book gives the best places to sip, sup & sleep! As the author, I hope this pleasant read-reference guide will give you lots of appropriate suggestions to enhance your time away together. I'd like to read reviews from others, too.
A terrific resource for great places and good buys. This book gives us great ideas for where to go-- from an afternoon's drive or overnight and especially for dinner and weekend plans. How often we've dropped a bundle on dinner and the place is lousy. This author knows what's terrific in every price range---and not just for couples.
